Aflac Insurance Confirms Data Breach Exposing Customer Social Security Numbers
Aflac, one of America's largest insurance providers, confirmed a June cyberattack compromising sensitive customer data including Social Security numbers. The breach, attributed to a sophisticated cybercrime group using social engineering tactics, marks the latest in a series of attacks targeting the insurance sector this month.
The company detected and contained the intrusion within hours, maintaining normal operations throughout the incident. "We regret this occurred and will keep stakeholders informed as the investigation progresses," Aflac stated, noting the attack appeared part of a broader campaign against insurance firms.
This follows similar disclosures from Erie Insurance and Philadelphia Insurance Companies earlier in June, highlighting growing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the industry. No ransomware was deployed in the Aflac breach, though unauthorized access was achieved through deceptive manipulation of systems.
